Sports first aid is an important qualification for many reasons. Here, we share a closer look at what sports first aid is and how our qualified coaches can deliver the course at your school.
What is sports first aid?
Sports first aid gives those working in the sports industry the skills and knowledge required to help should someone become injured. There’s a risk of injury with all sports, so it’s important that there’s always someone on hand to help should the worst happen during a P.E. lesson, training session, or competition. Having the skills and confidence to act quickly when someone becomes injured during sport can be the difference between a minor and major injury, which is why sports first aid is so important.
What does sports first aid cover?
A sports first aid course covers everything from minor injuries to major injuries and focuses on those that are most likely to occur when exercising and playing sport. During the course, you’ll learn about the responsibilities of a sports first aider, how to deal with a range of injuries, and the first aid supplies you might need to use. Essentially, you’ll leave the course with the knowledge and confidence required to help people following a sports injury. Whether this is to address a minor injury yourself or make them safe and comfortable until paramedics arrive in more serious situations.
Who should take a sports first aid course?
Anyone can take a sports first aid course, but there are some people in particular who could really benefit from this learning experience, including:
P.E. teachers – As children typically don’t yet understand how to stay safe during sport and can get overexcited, injuries during P.E. lessons are sometimes inevitable. With this in mind, it’s important that P.E. teachers are trained in sports first aid so they can better assist those in their classes.
Teachers – It’s not only P.E. teachers who might be required to step up should a sports injury occur during a P.E. lesson or playtime game. It’s a good idea for teachers in general to be sports first aid trained to give them the skills and knowledge required to assist should they need to.
Sports coaches – Anyone who spends their working days coaching others on how to play sport should be prepared with first aid skills in case injuries occur. Sports first aid courses cover a variety of injuries so will even be useful for coaches who focus on a specific sport.
